IP Rated Luminaires
The IP Code (International Protection Marking / Ingress Protection Marking) classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects, dust and water. Depending on their intended use, luminaires are designed and constructed to meet these ratings.
For recessed downlighters the IP rating is from below the ceiling.
Most common specified ratings are IP20, IP40, IP44, IP54, IP65.
First digit: Solid particle protection
2 - >12 mm
4 - >1 mm
5 - Dust protected
6 - Dust tight
Second digit: Liquid ingress protection
0 - None
4 - Splashing of water
5 - Water jets
These ratings are defined in the international standard BS EN 60529:1992.
